A little bit off-topic … but Sean Foo has been bringing up some relevant points regarding Japan and the endgame for MMT.

It’s interesting, because in Japan a lot of the older people do regard their life insurance policies a bit like a savings account, and Sumitomo Life Insurance does kinda-sorta work like a bank. This brings back echos of Silicon Valley Bank where having long duration government bonds on the balance sheet results in a loss when the central bank hikes rates. Thus, long duration government bonds are not risk free, and even short duration bills are still (to a lesser extent) do contain some risk.

If you can get a chat going with Sean on the topic of saving money, Whole Life policies, printing money, MMT and interest rates … might have some productive outcomes.
