Bob, I love this line of thinking, and I was connecting to what you were getting at before you delivered the punch line with the perfect fit of Musk’s businesses to this. There’s another element to this, too, that I think you didn’t include that is worth folding into the picture here.
You’re talking about a guy obsessed with Mars. This analysis doesn’t stop on an island but extends to another planet. He’s potentially building out an untouchability on a galactic scale. Everything you talked about here about an independent compound could not only happen at sea, but with an autonomy-driven off-world society as well. Science fiction is quickly becoming reality.
So it’s the secret droid army from Star Wars … but without all the plot twists, choreography and elaborate costume design?
About that whole underground lair thing … where is the easiest, and most logical place to hide if you want to drill out a secret base? Well obviously, you put your base alongside a legitimate tunneling operation … use that as the cover story … while you borrow the equipment already deployed and bore out a little extra for yourself. After getting that out the way, you probably would feel the need to gloat a little … and what better way than a Pagan ceremony with young men and women dancing in their underwear around a goat skull?
